Columbine Awards

Award Criteria

Divided into three sub-categories, Columbine Awards are designed to highlight best practices and creative ideas in regards to design, innovation and programming. Please see each category for specific criteria.

  • Design may include either new or renovated, park or recreation facility design projects.
  • Innovation may include marketing ideas, technology advances, communication, 'green' practices, partnerships, or operations - whatever you deem to be your best innovation!
  • Programming may include any program or initiative that embodies the values and mission of the profession and moves the agency toward a stronger position or role within the community.

Columbine Award for Design

Up to one (1) award may be given in each category.  Project must have been completed within the last three (3) years.

  • New Park Design
  • Renovated Park Design
  • New Facility Design
  • Renovated Facility Design
Nomination must address the following:

Introduction - Describe the compelling community need or the organizational challenge this project addressed; project completion date and total project budget.
Results - How did this project meet the community need / organizational challenge? Did this project create new or increased value for the community, partners or stakeholders? How did you measure success?
Creativity and Innovation - What creative and innovative elements were used in this project?  How did you respond to challenging environmental, cultural or site constraints?
Execution - How did you inform, engage and communicate with partners, stakeholders or policy makers about this project? Describe any use of non-traditional fiscal or community resources, i.e. grants, sponsorships, foundations, volunteers, etc. in the completion of this project.
Benefit - Did this project provide a substantial community benefit, improved operational efficiencies or noticeable positive change in your organization or community?

Required Supplemental Information:
  • Facility - PDF of site plan, or facility floor plan
  • Park - PDF of park master plan, including site plan
  • Maximum of four (4) high resolution photos (300 dpi); before and after photos if a renovation project
  • Maximum 2 examples of background information that support one or more of the criteria (PDF format, please!)
  • PDF of Notice of Completion or other documentation that states when the project was completed

Columbine Award for Innovation

Multiple awards may be given.  Innovation must have been executed within the last three (3) years.

Nomination must address the following:

Introduction - Describe the compelling community need or the organizational challenge the innovation addressed.
Results - What were the desired outcomes for this innovation?  How did you measure success?
Execution - How did you engage staff, community, partners, and/or stakeholders in the development of this innovation?  Describe your use of non-traditional fiscal or community resources, including but not limited to grants, sponsorships, foundations, or volunteers.  Tell us about your communication efforts to inform staff, community, policy makers, and partners about this innovation.
Benefit - Did this innovation result in a substantial community benefit, improved operational efficiencies or noticeable positive change in your organization or community?

Required Supplemental Information:
  • Maximum of four (4) high resolution photos (300 dpi) or PDF documents depicting the innovation
  • Maximum of 2 additional examples of background information that support one or more of the criteria can be added but are optional  (PDF format, please!)

Columbine Award for Programming

Up to three (3) awards may be given.  Program or initiative must have been executed within the last three (3) years.

Nomination must address the following:

Introduction - Describe the compelling community need or the organizational challenge the program or initiative addressed.
Creativity and Innovation - What makes this program or initiative truly innovative?  How did it increase value for the community, partners, stakeholders or your agency?
Results - What were the desired outcomes for this program or initiative?  How did you measure success?
Execution - How did you engage staff, community, partners, and/or stakeholders in the development of this program or initiative? Describe your use of non-traditional fiscal or community resources, including but not limited to grants, sponsorships, foundations, or volunteers. Tell us about your communication efforts to inform staff, community, policy makers, and partners about this program or initiative.
Benefit - Did this program or initiative result in a substantial community benefit, improved operational efficiencies or noticeable positive change in your organization or community?

Required Supplemental Information:
  • Maximum of four (4) high resolution photos (300 dpi) or PDF documents depicting the program or initiative
  • Maximum 2 examples of background information that support one or more of the criteria (PDF format, please!)

General Awards Information

Award Recognition

Each recipient of a CPRA Award will receive:

  • Statewide recognition at the 2018 CPRA Annual Conference Awards Banquet, Thursday, September 13, 2018 in Snowmass, CO
  • Statewide recognition in the 2018 Winter Issue of the CPRA Byline and on the CPRA website, www.cpra-web.org
  • CPRA representative available to re-present the Award at a local event
  • Entry into the CPRA Awards Hall of Fame

Award Nomination Deadline

Award nominations will be accepted anytime through Thursday, May 31, 2018 11:59pm.
Award recipients will be announced at the 2018 CPRA Annual Conference Awards Banquet, Thursday, September 13, 2018 in Snowmass, CO.
